Slither IO is the multiplayer snake game that took over the internet in 2016 and never really left. Created by developer Steven Howse, it blends the simple eat-and-grow loop of classic Snake with the massive multiplayer chaos of Agar.io — up to 50 snakes slithering around the same map at once, each one trying to get bigger while avoiding everyone else.
Howse's idea was straightforward: make a game anyone could play, with no paywalls, no accounts, and no learning curve. It worked. By the end of 2016, Slither IO was the most searched game on Google in the US. YouTube star PewDiePie featured it on his channel, and the mobile version shot to #1 on the App Store in both the US and UK within days of release.
Your snake never stops moving. You steer with the mouse or arrow keys, gliding around the map eating glowing pellets to grow longer. The pellets come from two sources: scattered dots that spawn on the map, and the remains of dead snakes — every snake that crashes leaves behind a trail of orbs. The goal is simple: become the biggest snake on the server.
Unlike the classic Snake game, you can pass right through your own body without dying. This changes everything — you can coil around smaller snakes to trap them inside your loops, cutting off their escape until they run into your tail.
| Input | Action |

Almost a decade after launch, Slither IO remains one of the purest examples of what makes an IO game work: one simple mechanic, executed perfectly, with no distractions. There's no menu grind, no battle pass, no gacha mechanics — just you, your snake, and 49 strangers all trying to get a little bit longer. It runs on phones, tablets, and any browser. And because Howse deliberately avoided microtransactions, the playing field has always been level. For more classic IO-style fun, give Smash Karts a try — same pick-up-and-play spirit with a completely different twist.
